Fall Quarter Guide

Starting a new school year is always difficult, but the switch to remote learning has only further complicated things for today's students. From dealing with a lack of motivation, to fighting off distractions, there are many obstacles to face in the virtual classroom. As we all go through these unprecedented times, DAY UCLA wants to provide some tips and reminders to help students navigate this transition, and make the most of their fall quarter.

Get Organized

  • Staying on top of your assignments is a necessary step for doing well in class. Record your assignments and due dates in a physical planner, a virtual planner, or even on your phone’s reminder app.

  • Block out time in your day to complete your work. Aiming to stick to the schedule you set for yourself will prevent procrastination and provide structure to your day.

Stay Motivated

  • Staying focused can be difficult in an environment that is not conducive to learning. Reduce distractions to the best of your ability by turning off your phone and going to a quiet place if possible.

  • There are various applications available that will block certain distracting applications from your phone for a certain period of time. By placing these locks, you can reduce the temptation to scroll on social media and lose focus.

  • If you can, set aside a quiet spot in your house or room that you can dedicate to online classes. By having a specific area dedicated to your studies, you can coerce your brain into viewing that area as a spot for learning, not relaxing.

Reach Out

  • Online learning is difficult for not only students but the faculty as well. Take advantage of resources and reach out to your professors if you are confused or struggling.

  • Go to office hours when you have a specific topic you would like more information about. Even if the concept of virtual office hours frightens you, rest reassured that your professors would like to create a connection with you as much as you would like to create one with them.

  • Participate in breakout rooms. As daunting as it may seem, your fellow students most likely are also waiting for someone else to make the first attempt at conversation. In a virtual environment, these small conversations are extremely important.

Take Care

  • Remember to take time for yourself and do things that you enjoy. Whether that be baking, putting on a face mask, playing sports, or even reading, schedule time in your day to take a few moments to relax and enjoy yourself.

  • This is a challenging time for us and therefore, our mental health may be negatively impacted. Do not feel guilty about these negative feelings. UCLA has many resources for students who need to talk through these feelings, so do not hesitate to help yourself.

As students and members of a changing society, we have a lot of worries even without the conditions of virtual learning to mull over. Though this situation is less than ideal, by implementing small steps into our daily routines, we can make the most out of this trying situation.
